On Sept. 9, 1917: The Manitoba Free Press reported that there was growing opposition among aviators to high-risk, record-setting flights, in the wake of search efforts in different parts of the world for flyers who had gone missing attempting such feats. In Alberta and British Columbia, there was a serious epidemic of infantile paralysis, with 70 cases reported, including seven deaths. Immigration to Canada was up over the previous year by 20,000.
