Set for speech: Gov. Gen. Julie Payette will today deliver the first throne speech since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government was re-elected. Daniel Blaikie, the NDP MP for Elmwood—Transcona, said he’ll be watching whether a minority status will change how Trudeau governs. “We’re going to get our first window into whether this period of reflection has ushered in a change of attitude,” Blaikie said. Lawsuit launched: A former client has filed a lawsuit against suspended Winnipeg immigration lawyer Paul Hesse. It’s the third to be filed against Hesse, who is under investigation by the Law Society of Manitoba, since June. He has yet to file a statement of defence in any of the three lawsuits. On Dec. 5, 1933: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that the fascist government of Italy was considering having the country leave the League of Nations. The Free Press provided a map of U.S. states showing which were considering repealing Prohibition and what the status of said efforts was, as a U.S. federal agency took authority for the flow of liquor in the country.
