On Dec. 10, 1963: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Studebaker Corporation was closing its automobile production in the United States and moving its operations to Canada. In Winnipeg, city council approved a pay raise averaging $503 per year for 48 of its 51 top-salaried employees. City council also reversed a stand it had taken in August and now was in favour of lowering the voting age to 18. The Soviet Union was rumoured to be considering sending a nuclear-powered icebreaker to the St. Lawrence Seaway at the head of a grain convoy to ensure the flow of Canadian grain. READ MORE
