Auschwitz anniversary: Survivors of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp gathered in Poland to mark the 75th anniversary of its liberation. On Jan. 27, 1956: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Soviet premier Nikolai Bulganin wrote to U.S. president Dwight Eisenhower that Russia wanted friendship with the U.S.; U.S. officials were studying the implications of Bulganin’s apparent gesture toward world peace. In Winnipeg, an armed bandit robbed a Bank of Commerce branch at Portage Avenue and Garry Street in the early afternoon. A five-month-old St. James boy died in his home as a result of malnutrition due to his parents’ neglect, a coroner’s jury ruled. READ MORE
