On March 25, 1947: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that U.S. president Harry Truman’s new foreign policy, which included aid to Greece and Turkey, was seen as a step toward war with Russia; two U.S. senators pushed for a bill that restricted U.S. involvement to non-military aid to Greece and Turkey. In Ottawa, Winnipeg North MP for the CCF Alistair Stuart called the anti-Communist special section of the RCMP a “glorified espionage bureau prying in a most inadequate way into the affairs of Canadians.”
