On July 21, 1926: The Manitoba Free Press reported that a federal election had been called for Sept. 14; Conservative prime minister Arthur Meighen, who had stepped into the role after Liberal prime minister Mackenzie King had stepped down, kicked off his campaign in Ottawa. In Charleswood, murder was suspected in the death of John Boivin, whose body was found, after a week’s search, with a bullet wound in the head; a firearm was found nearby. Boivin was known to have had a large sum of money on his person.
