Major milestone in polio fight: Health authorities are expected to declare Africa free of the “wild” poliovirus after decades of effort, although cases of vaccine-derived polio are still sparking outbreaks. The latter is a mutated form of the weakened but live virus contained in the oral vaccine. The declaration would leave Afghanistan and Pakistan as the only countries believed to have the wild poliovirus. The Associated Press reports. READ MORE
