Residential schools recognized: The federal government will announce today that two former residential schools — including one on the edge of Portage la Prairie — are being named National Historic Sites. The other former school, in Nova Scotia, was demolished long ago. They are the first two such schools to receive the designation. READ MORE

Trump travelling to Kenosha: U.S. President Donald Trump is set to visit Kenosha, Wis., today despite pleas by the city’s mayor and the state’s governor to stay away as protests continue after police shot a Black man last month. Trump is expected to meet with police officers and tour “property affected by recent riots,” the White House said. The Associated Press reports. READ MORE

Markey vs. ‘mystique’: Joe Kennedy III, a member of the House of Representatives and a member of the famous political family, is seeking to defeat incumbent Ed Markey in a primary election for the Democratic nomination for Markey’s U.S. Senate seat. Protest after man killed by police: Protesters gathered at a sheriff’s station just outside Los Angeles last night after two deputies fatally shot a Black man that afternoon. A spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the officers opened fire after a man they were trying to detain dropped a bundle of clothes that contained a handgun. On Aug. 1, 1939: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Nazi Germany invaded Poland, and German planes attacked Warsaw. France and Britain issued demands to Germany to “get out” of Poland. In Ottawa, prime minister Mackenzie King declared that if Great Britain became directly involved in the war, Canada would stand by her side. In Winnipeg, a young woman, 23, drowned in the Red River despite the valiant attempts by a man to save her, who was then pulled from the river exhausted and taken to hospital in critical condition.
