Sally strikes Alabama: Hurricane Sally made landfall near Gulf Shores, Ala., as a Category 2 storm early today, pushing ocean water ashore and bringing torrential rain. Forecasters say the hurricane will cause dangerous flooding inland, from the Florida Panhandle to Mississippi. The Associated Press reports.

On Sept. 16, 1930: The Manitoba Free Press reported that four people narrowly escaped death when a seaplane belonging to the Consolidated Mining and Smelting company made a forced landing in a field about a mile west of The Pas; pilot Ken Dewar had been conducting three field men for the company from South Indian Lake, roughly 300 miles from The Pas, when he attempted to make a landing in the Saskatchewan River when his machine died. In Edmonton, Maj. L. T. Burwash said his recent discovery of grave markers on King William Island from members of the doomed Franklin expedition was evidence the men had thought they were on the Canadian mainland, not an island.
