Legislative session starts: A new session of the Manitoba legislature begins this afternoon with a throne speech and a return to regular sitting days for the first time since March. Only half of the legislature’s members will be in the chamber to allow for physical distancing amid the COVID-19 pandemic. If a sessional order is passed later today, all 57 MLAs will be allowed to participate in the new session, either in person or online, starting Thursday. Larry Kusch reports. READ MORE
NHL draft concludes: The Winnipeg Jets have the 40th overall pick in the NHL draft, which resumes at 10:30 a.m. CT. The Jets selected centre Cole Perfetti of the Ontario Hockey League’s Saginaw Spirit with the 10th overall pick Tuesday night. Candidates set to clash: Mike Pence and Kamala Harris will face off in the lone vice-presidential debate of the campaign. No one is expecting the constant interruptions and personal attacks of the first presidential debate, but tonight’s event will likely be one of the most-watched undercards in U.S. history. On Oct. 7, 1981: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that in Cairo, vice-president Hosni Mubarak took control of the Egyptian government after the assassination of president Anwar Sadat; Mubarak, 53, was unhurt in the attack that was reported to have killed five other Egyptians in addition to Sadat and wounded 29 people. From Melbourne, Australia, where he was attending the Commonwealth Conference, prime minister Pierre Trudeau said he was willing to delay final debate on his constitutional package in Parliament in the coming week by a day or two, but not much longer. In Winnipeg, five young men who had been caught drinking alcohol in Kildonan Park were each fined a “cover charge” of $68.30.
