Building burns: Emergency crews have been at the scene of a building fire since about 4 a.m., and a spokesman for the Winnipeg Police Service said they would be there for several more hours. Wilkes Avenue is closed to traffic between Elmhurst and Loudoun roads, and Wilkes is also closed at Shaftesbury Road, the spokesman said. The Free Press will have more on the fire later this morning. Trump backs out of debate: The Commission on Presidential Debates announced this morning the second meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden would be “virtual” after Trump contracted COVID-19. Shortly after, Trump said in a telephone interview with Fox Business, “I’m not going to do a virtual debate,” adding, “I’m not going to waste my time at a virtual debate.” READ MORE
Undercard candidates clash: Mike Pence and Kamala Harris sparred in a vice-presidential debate that was much more civil than last week’s clash between Trump and Biden. The vice-president and U.S. senator were separated by plastic shields. The Associated Press reports. READ MORE

On Oct. 8, 1991: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that the Port of Churchill would begin laying off its 90 employees owing to a lack of business, both marking an early end to a frustrating season and calling into question the port’s future. Yugoslav air force jets rocketed the presidential palace in the capital of secessionist Croatia; the attack narrowly missed the leaders of the republic and the federal prime minister. Winnipeg police probed their own actions in the arrest of a mentally handicapped Indigenous man who confessed to murder, after they found he had been in custody at the time of the killing.
