Good morning.

A fair bit of snow fell last night and this morning, making morning commutes a bit tricky. A winter storm watch is in effect, with 15 to 25 cm of snow expected in Winnipeg on Tuesday. Mike McIntyre has a column on the approval of a shortened NHL season. And in Washington, both chambers of Congress are expected to vote on a massive COVID-19 economic relief bill today.

Travel ban begins: A temporary ban on flights to Canada from the United Kingdom took effect today. Britain has struggled to contain a new strain of the virus that has led to a surge in COVID-19 cases. The 72-hour restriction doesn’t apply to cargo flights or stops where passengers remain on the plane. The Canadian Press reports. READ MORE

COVID-19 crisis: Provincial health officials will announce the latest COVID-19 numbers at a news conference today. Manitoba reported 13 deaths and 229 new cases of the virus Sunday. Sarah Lawrynuik reports. READ MORE

Vaccination before inauguration: U.S. president-elect Joe Biden will receive the COVID-19 vaccine on live television on the same day a second vaccine, made by Moderna, begins arriving in states. Vice-President Mike Pence has gotten the shot, but President Donald Trump — who contracted the virus during the election — has not. The Associated Press reports. READ MORE

Police cruiser crash: Winnipeg police are expected to release more information about a two-vehicle crash involving a police cruiser Sunday night. The collision took place in the area of Pembina Highway and Dalhousie Drive. Police announced shortly after 5 a.m. that southbound Pembina had reopened to traffic.

New charges in Lockerbie bombing: The U.S. Justice Department appears set to announce new charges in the bombing of a passenger jet that exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland. The crash happened on this date in 1988. The Associated Press reports. READ MORE

On Dec. 21: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that in Cape Town, South Africa, the recipient of the world’s first heart transplant had died; the doctor who had performed the surgery said the patient’s death had left no evidence that heart transferrals should be discontinued. In Ottawa, the House of Commons justice committee said a person’s criminal record should be erased after five years of good behaviour, but reinstated if the person were later found guilty of a criminal offence. Canadian veterans would see their pensions boosted by 15 per cent.
