U.K. OKs new vaccine: The United Kingdom has become the first country to authorize use of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. The vaccine is expected to be widely used around the world because it is cheaper and easier to store than two already in use. READ MORE
Awaiting Moderna’s arrival: Federal health officials will hold a news conference in Ottawa at 11 a.m. CT, and an update on delivery of the Moderna vaccine is expected. Doses are expected to arrive in Ontario by today, while the Northwest Territories and Yukon have already received their first shipments. Manitoba’s new numbers: Manitoba health officials will release the latest COVID-19 numbers in a news release at 12:30 p.m. The province reported five deaths and 133 new cases Tuesday, the second consecutive day new cases were in the 100s. Katie May and Julia-Simone Rutgers report. READ MORE

On Dec. 30, 1938: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a St. James woman and her five children were dead after a fire ripped through their home; the family’s father was in hospital near death from burns, cuts and exposure. Off the coast of Spain, a Spanish government warship was forced aground while attempting to run a gauntlet of insurgent warships. Many thousands of Americans were expected to sign a petition urging their country’s leaders to break ties with Nazi Germany. Italian leader Benito Mussolini was said to be angling for another conference with British prime minister Neville Chamberlain.
