Set to seize control of Senate: Democrats have won at least one of the runoff elections for Georgia’s two U.S. Senate seats and are poised to win both, which would give them control of the chamber. The Associated Press declared early today that pastor Raphael Warnock has defeated Republican incumbent Kelly Loeffler and will become the state’s first Black U.S. senator. The other race is too close to call, with Democrat Jon Ossoff leading the GOP’s David Perdue. The margin is currently within the range where a losing candidate could request a recount, but the New York Times noted “the remaining vote is from heavily Democratic counties.” READ MORE
Verifying vote: Congress will meet in a joint session at noon CT to verify the votes of the electoral college after November’s presidential election. What is usually a procedural affair could result in delays, possible beyond today, if Republican representatives and senators follow through on plans to object to the votes of multiple states won by Democrat Joe Biden. It’s expected that any objections would be voted down by both chambers in separate votes. A Democratic objection involving only one state after the 2004 presidential election took a few hours to resolve. The Associated Press reports. READ MORE
Pro-Trump protests: Protests in support of President Donald Trump’s unfounded claims of a stolen election are planned in Washington, D.C., today as Congress meets to count the votes. Trump previously tweeted that he would attend a rally at a park near the White House. In an earlier tweet, he said things “will be wild.” The capital has mobilized the National Guard, fearing clashes between far-right groups, other Trump supporters and counter-protesters. READ MORE

On Jan. 6, 1978: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that three Winnipeg city councillors would study expanded arenas in Buffalo and Pittsburgh, and new facilities in Minneapolis, Denver and Philadelphia; the councillors were to make a recommendation to Winnipeg city council regarding whether the Winnipeg arena should be expanded or a new one should be built. Highway speeds throughout Manitoba would be reduced when the province joined the cross-country switch to the metric system. The Manitoba Dental Association distributed a revised fee guide for its 370 members providing for a 7.58 per cent fee increase in the coming year.
