Final day in office: Andrew Cuomo’s resignation as New York’s governor takes effect at 10:59 p.m. CT. He announced on Aug. 10 that he would step down as he faced likely impeachment proceedings over sexual harassment allegations. Lt. Gov. On Aug. 23, 1917: The Manitoba Free Press reported that Canadian forces advanced towards Lens in the ongoing Great War, German planes bombed towns along the English coast, and Arabs who had revolted against the Turks carried out extensive operations against them. The Times of London reported that Canadians were involved in the fiercest fighting of the war, in hand-to-hand combat against the Germans in No Man’s Land, and were victorious in capturing German trenches.
