Four face off in French: Four federal political leaders — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of the Liberals, Conservative Erin O’Toole, the NDP’s Jagmeet Singh and Yves-François Blanchet of the Bloc Québécois — will meet in a two-hour French debate. Eight dead after storm: A state of emergency is in effect in New York after the city was hit by a huge amount of rain from the remnants of Hurricane Ida last night. Subway service was shut down because of flooding, and at least eight deaths were reported in the city and in New Jersey. READ MORE

On Sept. 2, 1997: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Diana, Princess of Wales, had died in a car crash in Paris. People around the world reacted in shock; “She belonged to the world, not just Britain,” one observer said. A large funeral was being planned for the coming weekend. Some Manitobans responded by setting up a memorial AIDS fund and calling for a ban on tabloids exploiting her death.
