On Sept. 14, 1968: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Pierre Phillip Rossillon, described by prime minister Pierre Trudeau as a “secret agent of France,” had been coming to Canada since 1956 and had been in contact with Quebec separatists, according to RCMP records. One of Rossillon’s contacts was convicted for her involvement in a plot to blow up the Statue of Liberty. Hamiota MLA Earl Dawson said that the Air Navigation School at the Winnipeg Forces Base should be moved to Rivers, Man., if the military establishment there were to close down.
