On June 1, 1953: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that London was “agog” on the eve of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, with 500,000 people preparing to spend the night outdoors to get a good spot along the processional route. The crown jewels were taken secretly to Westminster Abbey under guard for the ceremony. The Queen would wear special TV makeup. According to one proposal, the monarch would live for a time in Canada and each of the six self-governing countries of the Commonwealth outside Britain. READ MORE
