Yesterday’s 109th Grey Cup game ended in heartbreak for Winnipeg Blue Bomber fans as the team failed to secure a late field goal.

The Winnipeg Jets host the Carolina Hurricanes, starting at 6:30 p.m., but they will have to do it without forward Nikolaj Ehlers, who is set to undergo surgery this week for a sports hernia and will likely be unable to play for 6-12 weeks.

In the face of rising rates of COVID-19, flu and respiratory virus infections, the Manitoba government has steadfastly refused to reinstate the mask mandate it ended last March, but there are still places only masked people are allowed.

On the bright side

Eric Morrish has his eye on the growing number of backyard and outdoor rink hockey players. While many don’t need a full-size equipment bag, a regular backpack won’t do the trick, either. So Morrish, founder of Pigeon Hockey Supply Co., designed a mid-size hockey bag that’s winning over local shinny enthusiasts. David Sanderson has the story.

On Nov. 21, 1947: The Winnipeg Free Press reported in England, a large crowd had gathered outside the country estate where newlyweds Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip were honeymooning, but the royal couple had no scheduled public appearances until they planned to go to church.
