On the bright side

After 20 years of restoration, the remains of an opulent house in Pompeii that likely belonged to two former slaves who became rich through the wine trade have been formally unveiled. The unveiling of the restored home is seen as sign of the rebirth of Pompeii, following decades of modern bureaucratic neglect, flooding and pillaging by thieves. The Associated Press reports.

On Jan. 10, 1941: The Winnipeg Free Press reported Royal Air Force bombers raided German positions in France along the Channel coast from Calais to Boulogne in daylight raids, following a heavy RAF attack overnight in the industrial Ruhr region of Germany. Italian troops were reportedly fleeing westward through Libya ahead of advance British patrols that had reached the Gazzala region 100 miles from the Egyptian frontier. Meanwhile, the plight of Italian forces in Ethiopia grew more desperate as the British chalked up victories there. Search our archives for more here.
