Free Press Head Start for Feb. 17

Good morning!

The weather is heading back into warmer territory this weekend, but don’t put away your long johns or block heater cord just yet — we’ll be back in the deep freeze early next week, with lows near -30 C. In the meantime, warm up with some laughs at the Winnipeg Comedy Showcase on Sunday. The event celebrates nine years of existence with its 32nd showcase.

What’s happening today

The 2023 Scotties Tournament of Hearts begins today, running until Feb. 26, at the Sandman Centre in Kamloops, B.C. Kerri Einarson’s team is chasing history this year, hoping to join the Colleen Jones dynasty (2001-04) in the record books as the only teams to win four consecutive Canadian titles. Taylor Allen has the story.

A federal commission is to report today on the Liberal government’s use of the Emergencies Act against protests that paralyzed the streets around Parliament Hill and jammed several Canadian border points early last year. Justice Paul Rouleau’s report will address whether the government’s emergency declaration was justified and make recommendations about how to update the legislation. The Canadian Press reports.

Today’s must-read

As preparations continue east of Winnipeg for a weekend reunion of the so-called “freedom convoy,” a gathering at a downtown church led by a coalition formed to counter messages of “anger and hate” ended with Nazi imagery and confrontation.

On Thursday, Community Solidarity Manitoba — which includes advocates for peace, social justice, immigrants, workers, public health and murdered and missing Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people — held a news conference, warning the reprised “World Unity Convoy” is rooted in “far-right interests.” Carol Sanders reports.

On the bright side

Creating a safe place to worship for LGBTTQ+ people is the goal of a service Sunday in downtown Winnipeg. The service — possibly the first of its kind in the province — is being organized by Theo Robinson, a transgender male and regional pastor for the Interlake Shared Ministry, and Andrew Rampton, rector at Holy Trinity Anglican Church. Queer Evensong starts at 5 p.m. at Holy Trinity (256 Smith St.). John Longhurst has the story.

On this date

On Feb. 17, 1966: The Winnipeg Free Press reported two city hospitals had reduced their number of maternity beds because of Manitoba’s falling birth rate; increased use of oral contraceptives was thought to be a contributing factor to the decline. Local author and historian Margaret Arnett MacLeod died at the age of 88 when a fire swept through her three-storey home on Maryland Street. Search our archives for more here.

It stands to reason the Canadian Women’s National Soccer Team — a decorated, venerated team who has put Canadian soccer on the map — should receive the same level of support from Soccer Canada in preparation for the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand as the Men’s National Soccer Team received leading up to the World Cup last fall in Qatar.
