Writing columns is one of the best jobs in a newspaper. Getting the green light to write on just about any topic (just about) and offer your opinion on said topic is certainly good for the ego.
It’s also, over a lengthy period of time, a challenge.
As a subject area, politics and public policy covers a broad swath of potential sub-topics. You’d have to be resident in an isolation chamber not to find lots and lots to write about.

But even amidst all of that low-hanging fruit, column writers do experience a growing sense of “been there, done that” in their work.
To help recharge my batteries and sharpen my column-writing senses, I’ll be taking a break from writing columns. For how long will be determined by how well an investigative project turns out.
I will write my newsletter every week and drop into our news pages here and there when breaking news demands it.
As a result of all this, my summer is going to be light on time off, and heavy on research and digging for my special project.
If you love your job, there is no better way to spend the summer.
