A man accused in a fatal shooting within an infamous West End apartment block was out on bail and ordered to wear an ankle monitor when the crime occurred, despite recommendations he remain in custody. Kyle Alex Harper, 25, is facing charges of second-degree murder in relation to the death of Cory Roger Roulette. Roulette, 38, was inside a suite in the 500 block of Furby Street on Aug. 26 when Harper and two other suspects forced their way inside and gunned him down, the Winnipeg Police Service said Wednesday. At the time of the shooting, Harper was facing a raft of firearms-related charges and wearing an ankle monitor. He had been released from custody under an absolute curfew and a promise to appear, court records show. Read the full story here.

On the bright side
A newly discovered comet is swinging through our cosmic neighborhood for the first time in more than 400 years. Stargazers across the Northern Hemisphere should catch a glimpse as soon as possible — either this week or early next — because it will be another 400 years before the wandering ice ball returns. The Associated Press reports.

On Sept. 7, 1956: The Winnipeg Free Press reported the dispatches from Cairo, London and Washington were confusing concerning the Suez crisis and whether talks over the canal had broken down completely and war was imminent. In Winnipeg, the city property chairman took to task the town planning commission over its failure to show “foresight” in the development of west Winnipeg, saying the city would have to spend thousands of dollars buying back property it had sold only a few years earlier. Quick action by a St. Charles mother saved two children from drowning in a water-filled excavation for a basement behind Isbister Street. Read the rest of this day’s paper here.
