Oct. 17 | Los Angeles at Winnipeg

Under normal circumstances, there wouldn’t be a whole lot of hype for a mid-October affair between the Winnipeg Jets and Los Angeles Kings.

But it’s safe to say tonight’s matchup won’t be a typical third game of the NHL regular season for the Western Conference clubs.

Pierre-Luc Dubois — who is simply going now by P-L Dubois — makes his return to downtown Winnipeg following the June 27 trade that sent the centre to La-La Land in exchange for Gabriel Vilardi, Alex Iafallo and Rasmus Kupari, along with a 2024 second-round pick.

All of which should create a lively atmosphere.

Winnipeg will be looking to build off two strong games to start the year, while Los Angeles is still in search of its first win after opening with a pair of losses on home ice.

Here’s everything you need to know to get you set for puck drop:

FROM THE PRESS BOX

MIKE SAYS:

Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I’m expecting to hear that early and often tonight, with paying customers expected to give Dubois the opposite of a warm welcome as he hits the ice. And to think we’re known as “Friendly Manitoba.” Of course, Dubois gave Jets fans plenty to cheer about during the two-and-a-half seasons he spent here, but I suspect the rocky way this relationship ended will have soured things to the extreme.

The atmosphere aside, it has the potential to be a heck of a hockey game.

The Kings, normally a pretty stingy defensive group, have been fairly leaky early on. And the Jets, with nine goals scored so far this season, have been coming in offensive waves and will look to keep that going. Los Angeles should also be a bit of a desperate bunch, given that it was viewed as a pre-season contender and won’t want to move on to Minnesota on Thursday night winless in its first three outings.

I’m also curious to see the crowd count tonight. Saturday’s home opener drew only 13,410 — a shockingly low number for a weekend matinee against the reigning Eastern Conference champions (led by former Jets coach Paul Maurice). A quick perusal of ticket websites this morning shows many seats are still available. Attendance, or lack thereof, might very well become an early season storyline around here.

KEN SAYS:

I’m not sure you can truly file this one under the category of revenge game, although it will be an emotional one for at least four players on the ice. Plenty of attention has been given to the three Jets facing their teammates for the first time — Iafallo, Vilardi and Kupari — but this one will probably be the strangest for Dubois.

Facing your teammates for the first time is sure to bring some butterflies, but it’s the return to the rinks that used to be home that often amps things up even further.

Having said that, all four players will be looking for bragging rights and to show their former clubs what they’re missing.

The Jets should be riding high after a 6-4 victory in Saturday’s home opener against Florida. The top line continues to produce at a high rate, with Kyle Connor (three goals, one assist) and Mark Scheifele (two goals, one assist) leading the way offensively through two contests.

It’s important to note that there have been contributions from all four units — and the defence corps — so far.

The Panthers made things interesting by scoring twice with an extra attacker. But until those late goals, the Jets had mostly done a good job of defending. That’s a constant process, especially early in the season, but you can be sure it’s high on the list of priorities for the Jets coaching staff.

Connor Hellebuyck is set for a third consecutive start in goal to begin the campaign. Numbers can easily be skewed in the early going, but he’s allowed eight goals in 118 minutes of work and will be looking to lower his goals-against average (4.07) and raise his save percentage (.852).

The Kings are an interesting study. They’re one of the contenders in both the Pacific Division and Western Conference after pushing the Edmonton Oilers in the first round in each of the past two seasons, but they’re still searching for their collective game so far.

Known for an ability to play a tight-checking game, the Kings have allowed 11 (including one in a shootout loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday), which is abnormal for them.

NOTABLE QUOTABLES

Jets coach Rick Bowness on Kings centre Anze Kopitar:

“I love watching the guy play. He’s a pain in the butt to play against but I love him. I don’t know the guy, but I’ll tell you since he came into the league, I’ve always admired how he played.

“He’s one of my favourite players to watch play the game. He’s a big, strong guy that’s so good at both ends, and he’s so detailed to his game. He’s an elite player and all the recognition he gets, he deserves.”

Bowness, on Vilardi, Iafallo and Kupari facing some former friends tonight

“You can talk all you want, but they’re going to be nervous. They’ve got to get through it. Probably about three or four shifts in they’ll forget they’re the opposition.

“There’s no friends out there. You take that mentality into the game. There’s not. But you’ve got to get through that. You can talk to them all they want, but they’ve got to experience that. Then they’ll be fine. I’m not worried about that.”

Jets captain Adam Lowry on the return of Pierre-Luc Dubois:

“I’m sure there will be a nice tribute and hopefully he gets a round of applause that he deserves. He was a great player for us for a few years. We wish him nothing but the best with the Kings. First and foremost, he’s an awesome guy, an awesome teammate and he likes to have a lot of fun.”

P-L Dubois on facing his former team:

“At the end of the day, it’s the same sport. Just a hockey game. Obviously before the game, after the game, seeing the guys, just being here right now I wanted to skate – I mean, I haven’t been on the away side for three or four years. I wanted to see that and not happen before the game.

“But yeah, seeing the guys in warm up I’m sure is going to feel weird, maybe the first faceoff, stuff like that. But then you get out there and the 60 minutes are just another 60 minutes.

“I know a lot of people might think that it’s a bigger game. But it’s an 82-game season, it’s two points. It’s the same thing. We’re just trying to win.”

Kings centre Philip Danault on Dubois’ return to Winnipeg:

“It’s hard to do, for sure. But just play your game. Once you’re on the ice, you engage yourself and that’s probably the best piece of advice. I know that all eyes are going to be on him. That’s how it is. That’s part of the NHL.”

Kings head coach Todd McLellan on the big summer trade:

“Well trades happen for a number of reasons with both organizations. With ours we looked at what we had on our roster now and what we would have in the future where our hockey club was, and P-L fit that in a different ways. Obviously Anze Kopitar isn’t going to play until he’s 65, even though we’d like him to.

“We just feel that that centre-ice position is so important. The size, the strength, and having fully developed centremen, which is what P-L is, is important for our organization at this point. He’s fit very well, he’s vey attentive, he’s asking real good questions.”

WHAT WE’RE WORKING ON

Ken caught up with old friend Dubois following the Kings’ morning skate and will have a story on his return to Winnipeg.

Mike is handling the game analysis tonight. You can read their pieces online at winnipegfreepress.com and in Wednesday’s print edition.
