Oct. 28 | Winnipeg Jets at Montreal Canadiens

Hockey stages don’t get much bigger than Montreal on a Saturday night. And the Jets will try to make this short road trip a sweet one as they face a Canadiens team off to a surprisingly strong start to the season.

Winnipeg made it three straight overall with an impressive 4-1 victory on Thursday in Detroit to open the two-game trek. Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck was the star of the show, but he’s going to get a well-deserved rest tonight with backup Laurent Brossoit looking for his first win of the young season.

Montreal is coming off a 4-3 overtime triumph on Thursday over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Cole Caufield was the scoring hero.

The game will feature a brother vs. brother matchup as Jets forward Morgan Barron goes up against younger sibling Justin Barron, who patrols the Canadiens blue-line.

Fun fact: Winnipeg is a perfect 2-0-0 this year on Saturdays, with previous wins over the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers.

FROM THE PRESS BOX

KEN SAYS: The Jets have done an excellent job of getting their goals against total down during this three-game winning streak. After giving up 19 goals in the first four games, they’ve given up only five during these past three and are hoping to continue that trend.

Laurent Brossoit makes his second start of the campaign and it’s just the fourth time he’s facing the Canadiens in his career. Jets left-winger Kyle Connor is up to five goals this season and has two game-winners, pushing his career total to 44.

After talking extensively with Jets forward Morgan Barron earlier this week about playing his second NHL game against his younger brother Justin, I will be watching closely to see how Round 2 goes.

The Canadiens will welcome D-man Kaiden Guhle back into the lineup after missing the past four games with an upper-body injury. He’s a mobile blue-liner that plays with an edge and is an emerging talent.

MIKE SAYS: I’ll be watching the second line of Cole Perfetti, Nikolaj Ehlers and Vlad Namestnikov closely. I thought they were really good in Detroit — how good was that Perfetti-to-Ehlers play that led to the first goal of the game? — and yet they didn’t see a whole lot of ice time together in the latter stages of the third period. After the game, associate coach Scott Arniel told Kenny he’s got to make sure that changes considering how well they are playing. If Perfetti and Ehlers can really get going, then look out. A deep forward roster gets even more dangerous, especially with Winnipeg’s other three lines producing consistently.

Now that the Jets have clawed their way back above .500, can they keep the foot on the gas pedal and put together another solid overall effort against a team that isn’t as strong as them on paper but always seems to give them fits? We’re about to find out.

NOTABLE QUOTABLES

Jets D Josh Morrissey on playing at the Bell Centre on a Saturday night:

“There are a lot of great arenas in our league, but it’s a pretty cool atmosphere and the history of the Montreal Canadiens, the passion of the fan base, the way the rink is even built, it’s right up on top of you, it’s pretty special to play here and I always love it. It’s one of my favourite arenas to play in, for sure.”

Jets D Dylan DeMelo on the strengths of the Canadiens team:

“They’re highly skilled. They’re at the top of the league off the rush. They have a good record, probably better than people would give them to start the year. When you’re playing a team that’s young and a little loose, you have to be careful.”

Jets F Nino Niederreiter on scoring his first goal of the season on Thursday:

“It definitely feels good to get on the board. You want to create chances every night and you want to score a goal each and every night if you can. So there’s always a thought process of trying to do the right thing to be successful. The most important thing is to trust the process and stay with it. The chances are going to come.”

Canadiens D Johnny Kovacevic on facing his former team:

“I’m still friends with guys on that side. I want to learn from my experiences of playing against them last year and not making too much of it. In a way, it’s just another game. I know that they’re not going to have any hesitations to hit me and I’m the same way back. If anything, for a few of those guys that I’m close with, I want to play them even harder..”
