'This was the worst I’ve seen it'

After Highway 75 was forced to close twice in three days, some residents are questioning the province’s preparedness and whether it waited too long to plow or treat the highway as ice built up during this season’s first winter weather.

All lanes between Morris and the Canada-U.S. border were shut for about 20 hours beginning Saturday afternoon. The highway was closed between Winnipeg and Morris for a couple of hours Monday night.

‘Can I have a bath? I stink already’

Family members of an 84-year-old man in care at Deer Lodge Centre say he hasn’t been bathed in three weeks.

“I just feel sorry for him, and for other people, that they can’t give them a bath,” the family member told the Free Press. “They’re always complaining (that) they have no time.”

A spokesperson from the WRHA said the staff at Deer Lodge Centre strive to “do everything possible to ensure patients and residents always receive the dignified and compassionate care they deserve,” but advocates for seniors say the provincial government should create a watchdog position that could investigate complaints independent of the WRHA or Manitoba Health.

'It’s just not right'

Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman, the two most famous members of the Guess Who, are suing Jim Kale and Garry Peterson, their former bandmates, for more than US$20 million.

Kale owns the rights to the Guess Who name and has performed with Peterson, who was the Guess Who’s drummer during the band’s 1965-75 glory days, off and on for years. Peterson has teamed up with four other musicians for the latest iteration of the Guess Who for shows mostly in the United States.

Bachman and Cummings allege today’s Guess Who “concocted a deceptive scheme” that implies Bachman and Cummings are performing with the band today.

'I’m just going with the flow'

Winnipeg Jets forward Cole Perfetti wasn’t about to deny that it’s been an adjustment not being on the ice as frequently some nights, but if you were expecting him to go on the record airing any grievances regarding his playing time, you’ve come to the wrong place.

That’s not his style.

“Whether I’m getting two minutes or 20 minutes, I’m going to try and make the most of what I’ve got with that time,” he says.
