Vehicles belonging to a Food Fare co-owner and his cousin were set ablaze in a daylight arson attack they suspect was carried out by two women who allegedly were caught shoplifting.

Store owners Tarik and Munther Zeid believe the arson is a retaliatory act involving the store at Portage Avenue and Burnell Street.

The Zeids say shoplifting has increased and there have been acts of retribution since a publicized April 28 altercation involving a store supervisor and a woman accused of shoplifting.

About 27.6 per cent of Winnipeg’s residential waste was kept out of the landfill in 2023 — the lowest percentage recorded since at least 2013, and down from 29.9 per cent in 2022.

Some of the drop in the diversion rate was caused by weather conditions resulting in less yard waste and the lighter weight of recyclables, city officials say; Winnipeggers are generally throwing out less garbage than they did a decade ago.

But environmental advocates say waste diversion rates will not significantly improve until the city adds a long-awaited curbside composting program.

The Winnipeg Sun, the Graphic Leader of Portage la Prairie and the Kenora Miner have been sold to the Klein Group from Postmedia Network Inc.

Kevin Klein, the president and CEO, did not respond to requests for comment on Monday, but some journalism observers see the sale as a hopeful sign the paper will carry on.

As Kevin Cheveldayoff did his due diligence and made calls to fill his head coaching vacancy, the Winnipeg Jets general manager kept returning to the same answer.

While it was important to take the temperature and hold a few other formal interviews, an exhaustive search like the one that was held back in the summer of 2022 was not required.

Omalluq Oshutsiaq was a carver of international renown, one of few female carvers from Kinngait, Nunavut, (formerly Cape Dorset) to garner such recognition.

An accident in the 1990s effectively ended her carving career — but she took up drawing in the last year of her life, creating vivid, hyper-detailed depictions of her everyday northern life, her childhood memories, as well as Inuit legends and stories.

Nineteen of her drawings compose Omalluq: Pictures From my Life, on view now in the Giizhig Gallery at WAG-Qaumajuq.
