The Wrap: Zero-emission vehicles, mayor backed, child poisoned, women criticized
And Manitobans at the Olympics

Good evening. Here’s a look at what our newsroom has been working on today:

'If the charging infrastructure is not there, if it’s not reliable, that will impact businesses'
The federal government aims for all new light-duty vehicle sales to be zero-emission by 2035. Canada is on track, with battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles increasing tenfold since 2017.
However, Manitoba lags behind. Only one percent of new cars registered in the province since 2017 are zero-emission — about 4,000 in total.
A lack of charging infrastructure outside urban centres hinders electric vehicle adoption in rural, remote, and First Nations communities.
Julia-Simone Rutgers explores this issue in depth.

“He hasn’t been sick one day since he was taken away from her,” the man said of his son, now seven.

'Imagine having such impossibly narrow definitions of love and fulfilment'
Comments made in 2021 by J.D. Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate, are making the rounds again. Vance said America is run by “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices they have made” — including U.S. Vice-President and likely Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris — “who don’t really have a direct stake” in the country.
The discourse around child-free women isn’t always so flagrant, but when you are a woman without kids, you encounter people’s discomfort with it all the time, Jen Zoratti writes.

'Everything seems significant to me and pretty special'
A small powerhouse of Manitoba talent is promising to strengthen Team Canada’s podium drive as the 2024 Summer Olympics opened with a sublime spectacle along the Seine River in Paris on Friday.
The keystone province’s delegation boasts some impressive credentials, with past Olympians Kelsey Wog, 25 (swimming); Shae La Roche, 31 (water polo); Tyler Mislawchuk, 29 (triathlon); and Olympic soccer gold medallist Desiree Scott, 36, featuring on the roster. Setter Luke Herr, 30, and outside hitter Eric Loeppky, 25, will make their Olympic debuts with the men’s volleyball team.
