The Manitoba government has issued a stop-work order on the emergency demolition of a warehouse at 579 McDermot Ave., after inspectors identified the possible presence of asbestos.

The issue has prompted Winnipeg’s mayor to call for support from the provincial government.

Mayor Scott Gillingham said governments must work together to develop new approaches to asbestos remediation and removal or else the blight of vacant and derelict buildings will continue to grow.

A former priest has been charged with sexually assaulting a pre-teen parishioner more than 50 years ago, in what police say could be just the beginning of a larger case against the now-81-year-old man.

A woman in her 60s told police she had been sexually assaulted multiple times over the course of two years, starting when she was 11, when she was a parishioner at St. Elijah Romanian Orthodox Church in Lennard, Man.,  RCMP said in a news release Thursday.

Constantin Turcoane, 81, of Regina, turned himself into police after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

RCMP are urging anyone with information on these or similar allegations to contact police.

Friday marks the 25-year anniversary of Canada’s men’s baseball team capturing its first medal in Pan Am Games history.

The road to that bronze medal was paved with moments of exhilaration and a hefty dose of heartache. It also signalled that Canada would be a force to reckon with in international baseball competitions in the years to come.

“That was the biggest home run that I’ve hit in my career,” says Andy Stewart. “The way it all came together was amazing. I remember it like it was yesterday.”
