Plus: Building a city to keep the next generation here

Good evening. Here’s a look at what our newsroom has been working on today:

'Leadership handcuffed by the institution’s vision'
Three days after the Free Press reported details of an examination launched by Doctors Manitoba over working conditions at CancerCare Manitoba, its board issued a letter intended to reassure its staff.
“The Board recognizes there are workload challenges here at CancerCare Manitoba; we also know you have been heroic in delivering excellent patient care despite those challenges,” chair Jeoffrey Chipman wrote in the letter, obtained by the Free Press.
Tyler Searle reports.

'She is not the kingpin'
For her “money mule” role in a scheme that preyed on nine Manitoba seniors, an Ontario woman has been sentenced to house arrest.
The grandparent scam has victimized an increasing number of Manitoba seniors in the past few years. It involves a fraudster posing as a relative in need of money. Scammers are known to research obituaries or start the phone call with leading questions to gain credibility with the victim.
Dean Pritchard reports.

'I don’t want somebody else to go through this'
All women have fat and dense breast tissue in their breasts, but the amount varies.
While mammography works exceptionally well in spotting cancer in women with fatty breasts, it alone is not enough for women who have dense breasts.
As a result, some women who have mammograms think they don’t have cancer — when they do.
A.V. Kitching reports on what women need to know about breast density, and how to talk to their doctors about it.

'Who are we building our city for?'
Every year Winnipeg loses thousands of people to other cities, many of them young, educated adults looking to establish their roots elsewhere.
The inability of Winnipeg to retain its young people has always been a problem, but in the face of changing demographics, it’s an issue that has today become even more pressing, writes columnist Brent Bellamy.
If we want our children and grandchildren to choose Winnipeg as the place they call home, Bellamy writes, we must begin by building a city that responds to their priorities and dreams.

'The pieces are timeless'
Jessie Margolis and Jonathan Pokasuwan believe there’s a need for a different tier of second-hand shopping in Winnipeg. There are thrift and luxury consignment options, but not much in the mid-range.
To fill the need, popular retailer Danali is launching After Danali, an online consignment shop that will stock items Danali has previously sold and clothing similar to its offerings, but with prices 60 to 70 per cent lower than new.
Gabrielle Piché reports on the new retail offering and it’s connection to more mindful consumerism.
