Free Press Head Start for March 20

Good morning.

Rejeana McIvor’s heart sank when she was told her one-year-old cat, Nami, was found dead under a bridge in west Winnipeg days after she had to give the animal to a new owner in December. Chris Kitching has the story.

As the weather warms, North End homeowners say a spring cleanup can’t come soon enough as garbage emerges from melting snow and both the city and landlords trade accusations. Tyler Searle reports.

Spring is almost here — officially, at least. The vernal equinox arrives today, marking the start of the spring season for the Northern Hemisphere and the fall in the Southern Hemisphere. On the equator, the sun will be directly overhead at noon. Equinoxes are the only time when both the north and south poles are lit by sunshine at the same time. The Associated Press has more here.

Following hundreds of millions of dollars in cost overruns, Manitoba Public Insurance is abandoning its Project Nova technology overhaul after a revised estimate pegged costs at $435 million, 50 per cent more than previously thought, the Free Press has learned.

Sources confirmed MPI officials met with the Public Utilities Board this week to reveal the new cost estimate and to indicate it is closing the book on Nova and writing off the money spent to date on the final two phases of the four-phase project.

The Crown corporation plans to pursue some of the goals of Project Nova, but in a more time- and cost-effective manner, the sources said. Dan Lett has the story.

On the bright side

American rapper and singer Jelly Roll took a break from performing to shoot hoops and speak with incarcerated teens at the Manitoba Youth Centre before his sold-out show in Winnipeg.

A spokesperson for the Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union, which represents corrections officers at the youth centre, confirmed the Grammy-nominated artist played basketball with each unit at the centre and was “really generous with his time (and) super encouraging.” Nicole Buffie has more here.
