A rural municipality that has warned the Manitoba government for years about a dangerous highway intersection is renewing pleas for safety changes following a deadly crash last week.
RM of St. Andrews officials have long raised alarm about the intersection of Highway 8 and Highway 67, which has seen multiple collisions over the years. Most recently, an 18-year-old Stonewall man was killed when his SUV collided with a tractor-trailer while attempting to cross westbound on the roadway on May 21.
“I hate that it’s another life lost, just to make somebody understand that it is a serious safety concern here. That’s the part that really bothered me… This is something we knew might happen,” St. Andrews Coun. Justin Fiebelkorn said by phone Monday. Tyler Searle has the story.

On the bright side
A team of Canadian researchers has created a test they say could quickly predict if a patient is going to develop sepsis, a life-threatening condition that happens when the immune system has a dysfunctional reaction to an infection and starts attacking the body’s own organs and tissues.
Sepsis kills thousands of people in Canada and close to 50 million people worldwide every year, said Dr. Claudia dos Santos, senior author of a research paper about the test published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications. The Canadian Press has more here.

On May 27, 1935: The Winnipeg Free Press reported eight men were arrested and one woman was in hospital after an automobile was stoned by a large gathering of strikers and pickets at the plant of the Canada Creosoting Company Ltd. in Transcona, where a strike involving 60 workers had been underway for nearly a week; police expected to arrest additional suspects. A four-year-old girl suffered fatal burns after lighting a sparkler that ignited her clothing; a teenaged neighbour also suffered severe burns to her hands when she smothered the flames.
