On Nov. 12, 1947: The Winnipeg Free Press reported the federal government would undertake a three-fold program to combat Canada’s shortage of U.S. dollars. The British government would attempt to curb inflation by imposing a 10 per cent tax on betting on soccer and dog track racing, among other measures. Data from the most recent dominion bureau of statistics report showed women outnumbered men in the Winnipeg metropolitan area. Read the rest of this day’s paper here.
