A brief welcome back

(A note to readers: due to an oversight, Dish was published but not mailed on Friday. Our apologies for the mistake.)

Keeping it short this week as we collectively crawl back into our post-holiday routines.

“I haven’t eaten enough chocolate today” is a thing I said out loud this week. It was true. I was in the office for the first time and hadn’t enjoyed the 10-20 pieces of chocolate I’d been hoovering daily since mid-December. Don’t worry, the situation was rectified as soon as I returned home to my dwindling stash of Lindt balls.

I’ve also been slowly relearning how to cook for a household of two after much merry hosting and feasting. My only new year’s resolution is to try and make a regular-sized portion of food this month.

We’ll be back with more Winnipeg food and drink news in two weeks!

Tasty tidbits

🏗️ While many of the shops at Pineridge Hollow will close on Jan. 12 for a spell, which isn’t out of the ordinary this time of year, the restaurant of the same name will take a longer hiatus and will close for renovations until February, according to a social media post. The reopening date has yet to be determined.

😴 Up in Gimli, meanwhile, Interlake Brewing Co. (72 1st Ave.) also announced it would be closed temporarily — until Jan. 23 — for a refresh of the space and some much-needed down time for staff.

💼 Job postings on Indeed as well as an update on the City of Winnipeg permits page confirm Stella’s Cafe is taking over the restaurant in the Polo Park EQ3 location. The eatery had previously been called EQ3 Bistro, and had been run by the folks behind Deer + Almond. EQ3 Bistro closed in September 2025.

Ben: With a little break in my reading requirements over the holidays, I finally dove into a tome that had languished unread on my bookshelf for some time — Patrick Radden Keefe’s Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland.

It’s a work of non-fiction about the Troubles of the 1970s in Northern Ireland, abductee Jean McConville and her family, Irish Republican Army (IRA) volunteer Dolours Price and more. It’s a riveting account of a deeply turbulent time in Ireland’s history that was made into a series which ran on FX (and is available in Canada on Disney+ and CBC Gem).

Radden Keefe’s next book, London Falling: A Mysterious Death in a Gilded City and a Family’s Search for Truth, comes out on April 7.

Eva: Heated Rivalry, duh. If you haven’t watched the greatest CanCon love story of all time (available to stream on Crave), I strongly encourage you to close this email and join the cult. It’s a tender masterpiece that has spawned life-affirming memes and rapidly influenced every corner of pop culture.

Even Winnipeg sandwich shop Hoagie Boyz has jumped on the moment with a Heated Rivalry-inspired sammie. Although, a tuna melt would’ve been more fitting, in my opinion.
