City councillor Russ Wyatt (Transcona) has registered to run for re-election despite facing sexual assault charges.
“After much reflection, I have decided to stand for re-election in the Winnipeg municipal election,” Wyatt said in a statement Monday.
Wyatt has served five terms in the Transcona ward. Morgan Modjeski reports.
In case you missed it, Manitoba’s provincial deficit is only half of what was predicted in last year’s budget forecast.
Manitoba’s audited public accounts for the last fiscal year show the province is “moving in the right direction,” NDP Finance Minister Adrien Sala said Monday.
The provincial deficit for fiscal 2025-26 was $832 million, nearly half the $1.67-billion deficit forecast in December, and in line with the $794-million estimate in Budget 2026. Carol Sanders reports.

On the bright side
Ryan Smoluk’s Maze City, on now at WAG-Qaumajuq, is a full circle moment.
The Winnipeg visual artist took art classes as a kid at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, his work first exhibited there as part of Through the Eyes of a Child.
And now, his work is back on the walls of the WAG, this time in his first solo exhibition at the city’s largest gallery.
“It has been a dream of mine, and now it’s a dream I can share with other people,” Smoluk says on a recent afternoon in the gallery space.

On Sept. 22, 1943: The Winnipeg Free Press reported Gen. George C. Marshall, chief of staff of the United States Army, had been nominated for supreme command of the Angl-American land, sea and air forces ahead of a planned mass invasion of German-occupied Europe. Important discussions were being held in Ottawa concerning whether the Winnipeg Grain Exchange should be closed.
