Election Extra: Liberals win minority; Singh, Poilievre lose own seats

Election nights are rarely easy and almost never pretty.

While you might have some sense of what the outcome will be — at least in some districts — the evening tends to have a mind of its own that often takes you well past deadline into the early morning hours.

This time around, things in our newsroom started off on the right foot. Our tradition of pizza for the night crew and reporters had everyone well fed and primed.

But when Elections Canada’s website started to stall with results, talk of pizza gave way to large servings of profanity.

Still, we persevered, which is what newsrooms are hardwired to do.

When Tory Leader Pierre Poilievre took to the stage with his concession speech at midnight, our deadline had already turned into a pumpkin.

That meant Liberal Leader Mark Carney’s victory speech would be even later, along with the photos we would need for the front page.

By 1 a.m., it was safe for me to leave, even though our web staff were still updating online stories until 2 a.m.

There’s no way any newsroom can get everything taken care of on election night, which is why we will be delivering even more stories today and in Wednesday’s print edition.

As this will be our final edition of Election Extra for the 45th General Election, I wanted to thank you for reading, and above all, thank you for voting.
