On May 11, 1950: The Winnipeg Free Press reported thousands of evacuees fled the greater Winnipeg flood area by train, bus, plane and private car; though numbers were difficult to tabulate, one official estimated the number would reach 30,000 by the next day. Army and civilian flood fighters struggled to prevent the Red and Assiniboine rivers from joining at the Norwood Bridge. The city was still able to protect its main public utilities from the flood danger. READ MORE
