On Aug. 10, 1932: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that at the imperial trade conference in Ottawa, Canada’s response to Great Britain’s request for concessions on iron and steel exports would be to remain firm in not granting further changes. The tense state of negotiations was thought to be the gravest crisis of Canadian prime minister R.B. Bennett’s career.
