A 17-year-old girl feared for her safety and wanted to “get out” of the home she shared with a Carman man now accused of killing her, his partner and his three children, audio recordings and text messages show.

Myah-Lee Gratton sent voice notes to friends that alleged Ryan Manoakeesick was prone to violent outbursts, after dishes were thrown at her, he screamed in her face, and he kicked and threatened to kill his common-law wife in the weeks before the mass slaying.

MPI’s $290-million Project Nova technology upgrade — which will allow Manitobans to renew driver’s licences, register vehicles and make insurance claims online — needs a second look and its timeline for completion is uncertain.

“There has not been much work in the last 12 months on Nova,” said new CEO Satvir Jatana, taking questions from legislators Tuesday for the first time since her appointment on Feb. 6.

Jatana attributed the lack of progress to turmoil at the top of the corporation, including the firing of former CEO Eric Herbelin, the resignation of former chief information technology officer Siddhartha Parti and last year’s 10-week employee strike.

Sugar + Salt Bakeshoppe celebrated its third anniversary last month, a milestone owner and head baker Kayla Milligan was not certain she’d hit after opening her storefront on Corydon in 2020.

Milligan is a mostly self-taught baker with a nutritional science background; she went to school specifically for cake design and now specializes in ornate wedding cakes and kids’ birthday cakes.

“We have an endless amount of families where I did the parents’ weddings and showers and now the kids’ cakes,” she says. “That’s one of my favourite things; I’ve gotten to grow up with so many of these families.”
