Back in the stream of things

Happy Wednesday, folks.

We’re halfway home.

Got an email from my old friend Barry Craig on Tuesday morning:

Hi, Steve. Maybe you can answer this: I can’t find anyone to tell me what channel will be broadcasting upcoming Jets games? Will it be CBC, TSN and/or Sportsnet? Or will it be all of them? Would appreciate knowing. Regards Barry Craig

Finally, something I CAN answer!

All NHL playoff games will be on Sportsnet. Some will also be on CBC.

For me, that’s good news — I will only need to renew one streaming subscription. I unplugged from cable awhile ago and then purchased streaming subscriptions to watch the Jets and Bombers on TSN and Sportsnet. I cancelled both when the COVID-19 pandemic put a halt to live sports. Guess I will get back in the stream of things sometime this week. MLB season opens Thursday and the Jays are also on Sportsnet.

In case you missed it, here is the schedule for the Jets/Flames elimination-round series:

Game 1 — Saturday, Aug. 1, 9:30 p.m. CT (Also on CBC)

Game 2 — Monday, Aug. 3, 1:30 p.m. CT

Game 3 — Tuesday, Aug. 4, 3:45 p.m. CT

Game 4 (if necessary) — Thursday, Aug. 6, TBD

Game 5 (if necessary) — Saturday, Aug. 8, TBD

On the subject of streaming, started watching Band of Brothers series on Crave last weekend, on a suggestion from my boss Paul Samyn. Must-see TV, peeps.

Hope that clears things up Barry. Any other questions, you can find me here.

Our coverage

Jason Bell has a pair of stories from Jets training camp:

Time to produce: Nik Ehlers has been through a relatively long playoff run with the Jets and also a short one – 21 games in all – and has yet to pot a postseason goal. Jets need the three-time 25-goal scorer to snap the slump and help spread the scoring around in a short play-in series with the Flames;

• Making the most of it: The good money’s on Paul Maurice going hard with his top-nine forward group, however, the bottom trio of Nick Shore up the middle with likely Mathieu Perreault and Mason Appleton will need to provide energy and keep the puck in the offensive zone. The goal is eating up minutes, keeping the puck down low and creating some chances – while the top-9 catch a breath on the bench.

Also today:

• Winnipeg has been tentatively chosen as the “hub city” for a possible CFL 2020 season. Jeff Hamilton has details on what that means for the city and league;

Mike McIntyre and I got together for our usual Tuesday chat and produced Episiode #27 of our weekly Jetcetera podcast. As he prepares to head to Edmonton later this week to begin covering the most unique playoffs in NHL history, Mike chatted with me about Jets summer camp so far, what the hubs and bubbles will look like, and the veil of secrecy over “unfit” players. We also discussed Winnipeg bidding to be a CFL hub city and whether that can save the football season, plus ongoing COVID-19 concerns in the sports world and community at large;

• Basketball camps are beginning to pop up around town, but with only two players allowed per hoop, don’t expect competitive play to tip-off anytime soon. Taylor Allen chatted with Basketball Manitoba executive director Adam Wedlake and Attack Basketball head coach Sukhvir Singh and provides an update on the current status of the sport;

• And Mike Sawatzky has a yarn chatting with Tri-City Americans BM Bob Tory on the WHL restart, the attitudes of returning players and their parents and what he thinks will be a delayed start this season.

What we’re reading

• Sportsnet’s Stephen Brunt has a video essay on how sports return to bring us back together;

• ESPN has produced a cool graphic feature that tries to show a day inside MLB’s COVID protocols.
