Buck’s team battles cancer blitz

Happy Saturday, folks.

Several years ago, I played in the annual Winnipeg Blue Bombers golf tournament.

It was a spectacular summer day at Glendale and I recall hitting it pretty well, playing in a foursome that included offensive lineman Obby Khan.

Along with the fairways and greens, the day also included a terrific post-round dinner and some fancy swag: a nice Bombers duffle bag and an authentic helmet that I had signed by Obby, Doug Brown, Mayor of Swaggerville Oddell Willis and Buck Pierce.

Everyone else was getting them autographed, so it seemed like the thing to do.

I’m not really a collector of sports memorabillia, so the helmet and bag had pretty much just been collecting dust around my house for close to a decade when I decided to get rid of them over the winter.

Not sure what to do with them, I figured I’d post them on Kijiji and see if I could get a few bucks.

I won’t tell you what my asking price was, but after several inquiries someone agreed to buy the bag for $35 if I threw in the helmet too. Sure, why not — it was just the right number to order Chinese food.

The purchaser was over the moon when she saw the helmet was signed by Buck. I should have held out for $50!

Just kidding… kinda.

Currently the Bombers offensive co-ordinator, Buck Pierce was as popular a QB as I’ve seen in these parts.

Tough as nails, taking hits that left him — and those in the stands — gasping for air, Buck seemed to capture the hearts of blue-collar football fans in this city like few before — or since — him.

Chris Walby once told me that Tom Burgess was the toughest QB he’d ever protected — the Grey Cup winner was always willing to hang in there and take a hit to make a play.

Many of you might suggest Matt Dunigan was the grittiest of all-time.

And while we have chronicled the determination on the field of many Bombers QBs over the years, I’m going to suggest none of those stories match the courage Jeff Hamilton writes about today as he tells you the story of how Buck’s wife Lori has battled cancer the last few years.

Lori Pierce is currently in remission and the couple tell Jeff about how they have embraced the challenge cancer has posed and how dealing with the disease has changed their view of life.

Savour your weekend. folks.

As always, you can reach me by replying to this mailing or by sending me an email here.

PS: During some research on Friday, I came across a video of Buck and Lori’s 2014 wedding day. It’s very touching, particulary after reading Jeff’s story.
