Busy Bombers

Good morning, folks.

I received an email from the CFL Thursday morning with a subject line that said:

MOMENTUM BUILDS FOR GREY CUP UNITE — Total number of events approaches 40 as CFL clubs roll out local plans

The hyperbole made me chuckle a bit — but hey, it caught my attention, so I thought I would get Taylor Allen to check on what the Bombers have planned, and do a story to give the event and league a little plug. To add to the momentum, you might say.

I noticed in the event’s schedule that the B.C. Lions were doing a town hall. Were the Bombers also planning to do such a thing? I’m guessing you Blue and Gold fans out there might wanna hear from CEO Wade Miller? Maybe you have a question or two for him?

If he’s not too busy, that is. Oh, turns out he is.

Taylor contacted Bombers Director of Communications and Media Relations Darren Cameron early Thursday morning to tell him we wanted to do a story on Grey Cup Unite and the Bombers plans for it, and made a request to chat with Miller.

Nope. Apparently, he’s too busy.

Last week, the CFL sent out an email announcing changes to the annual college draft and Taylor put in a request to chat with Bombers GM Kyle Walters. Walters ended up calling when Taylor was on the phone doing an interview for a story on Tammy Mahon, but then Cameron was unable to track him down for a call back. Like, wouldn’t he be in his office?

Taylor has also recently requested a chat with head coach Mike O’Shea. Um… nope, also busy.

Man, there’s gotta be some news to report if they’re all so darn busy!

Are you at all curious what they’re so busy doing? I wasn’t really, but I kinda am now.

Planning for next season? The one after that?

A few years ago, Wade and I were chatting at a Bombers event and he told me the team did a survey to see where fans get their news about the team. At the time, the No. 1 source was the Winnipeg Free Press. The team’s website was down the list a bit, but he told me it was his goal to change that.

Hiring Hall of Fame football writer Ed Tait from staff has perhaps helped, but I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest there’s still a Bombers fan or two reading our paper. I know there’s a couple at least who subscribe to this newsletter.

So, Wade knows Bombers fans rely on us to deliver you news about the team but apparently he doesn’t have five minutes for us — I mean you.

Ultimately, we decided to not do a story advancing the event — Taylor moved on to more co-operative subjects.

But here’s what the Bombers do have planned:

Friday, Nov. 20 @ noon: A virtual round-table chat with Andrew Harris, Pat Neufeld, Jermarcus Hardrick, Stanley Bryant and Zach Collaros as they reconnect and reminisce about the 2019 season, followed by Drew Wolitarsky performing a virtual concert @ 12:30 pm;

Sunday, Nov. 22 @ 5:30 pm: Re-broadcast of the 2019 Grey Cup game with live commentary.

You can check out the entire Grey Cup Unite itinerary here.

It looks like a pretty cool event and we will have daily coverage next week.

No sense cutting off our nose to spite our face.

As always, folks, you can reach me by replying to this mailing or by sending me an email here.

Our coverage

Don’t paint with the same brush: Add the president of the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League to the growing list of people vilifying the ownership group of a pair of MJHL squads for surreptitiously booking ice time outside the city to get around COVID-19 restrictions. Don McIntosh told Jason Bell on Thursday that his 13-team league had been doing things by the book since league play started in mid-October, and is upset the junior league’s shenanigans has put a black mark on the local hockey community;

MJHL on ice: The disappointment was real but it was impossible to not see this move coming. Four MJHL players have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past two weeks and with Manitoba Health decreeing a provincewide move to code red status, an immediate halt to hockey was set in stone. Mike Sawatzky reports that when the players will return to the ice is unknown but the league announced its intention to restart the regular season on Jan. 1;

• Raw deal: Zoom calls, online classes, and home workouts. It’s not exactly what first-year university student-athletes had in mind when they were growing up dreaming to be a Manitoba Bison or a Winnipeg Wesmen. Taylor Allen spoke to a pair of freshman at both the U of M and U of W to see how they’re coping with their unusual introductions to U Sports.

Thanks to all of you who sent me heartwarming emails in response to my Thursday mailing about my family’s time in uniform. Here’s one I thought you would all like:

• Hi Steve.

Really liked your story about the members of your family serving in the military and how proud you and all Canadians are of their service.

Scrolling through social media yesterday there are many similar stories such as yours. My wife and I have had many relatives serve and die during the two world wars and we were fortunate in past years to visit some of their gravesites in Europe.

My point though is that these brave people put their lives on the line for us to defeat a terrible enemy and many paid the ultimate price. Now it’s our turn to do something to defeat another enemy (COVID-19). So many people are not willing to wear a mask and practice social distancing to defeat this new enemy. It’s not asking too much is it to stay home? It’s unconscionable that so many people don’t care about their fellow citizens. We can defeat COVID by pulling together. We owe it to previous generations of Canadians.
