Dreams do come true

I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting Madison Martin. But the young Brandon woman is one of the biggest sports fans I know, often sharing her insightful thoughts on various games and news with me through email.

Her first message arrived a couple years ago, after a column I’d written about MLB.

Hi Mike,

I’m also a huge baseball/Jays fan! I’ve been a fan since 2015 when we went to a game in Toronto. It was against the Twins, but that’s all I can remember as I had absolutely no idea what was going on.

I’m totally blind and we used to have to go to Toronto for yearly eye appointments and so we’d gone to a few other Jays games over the years, but I don’t remember any of them, other than the fact that I have a ball that Mom bought at a game back in 2001 or something.

So anyway even though I knew nothing about the game when we went in 2015, my parents still wanted me to know what was going on, so they called someone with the Jays and got it all set up so that I could listen to the radio feed, but when we got to the ballpark the game was blacked out. We were all pretty upset.

Then the Jays started doing well and so we started following the team. I don’t know if you’ll understand this, but because of my blindness the quality of the announcers is extremely important to my enjoyment of the game.

Anyway, I absolutely love the Jays TV announcers, it was through them that I learned the game. They’re the best in baseball, they’re entertaining, interesting, informative, exciting, not annoying/self-absorbed and most importantly really great at describing the game. I know there are Jays fans who don’t like them, that’s their loss, there are so many bad TV baseball announcers (and hockey ones too, but there are more good hockey then baseball ones). I can watch a Jays game and never wonder what’s going on.

I know you might be wondering why I don’t listen to games on the radio as radio broadcasters are supposedly better at describing the game, but I’ll tell you why, because I find with radio I can’t hear the actual sounds of the game, which is a way for me to know what’s going on. So yes I think it’s safe to say Jays fans are spoiled with the broadcast crew!

It’s my dream to be able to go to a game and be able to meet them, I hope that’ll be able to happen, they seem like really nice normal people!

Fast forward to the other night as I’m sitting in my living room with the Jays-Yankees game on. During a break in play, who do I see on my TV but Madison up in the broadcast booth with Buck and Dan. How cool is that?

I heard from her the following morning as she emailed me a couple pictures her family snapped. And I must say it absolutely made my week.

Great stuff!

TWO MINUTES FOR LOOKING SO GOOD?

For reasons I can only assume are linked to having far too much time on their hands, a group of individuals with a website called gambling.com recently decided to run the mug shots of all 32 NHL coaches through something called the “Golden Ratio Face App.”

The end result — and I can’t believe I’m actually typing these words — is the Most Handsome NHL Head Coach rankings of 2022.

Edmonton bench boss Jay Woodcroft took home the title, which I suspect is going to lead to no shortage of mocking and ridiculing coming his way from players, colleagues, family members and friends.

At the bottom of the list was poor Peter Laviolette of the Washington Capitals. I guess when his team comes up with two points, it’s considered winning ugly?

There’s been some good zingers already from coaches informed of this little beauty contest. The best was San Jose’s David Quinn (he finished 29th), being told that Detroit’s Derek Lalonde finished No. 3.

“I know Derek Lalonde. He ain’t No. 3. There’s a three in there, but there’s another number after it. Please quote me,” he told reporters yesterday.

Oh, don’t worry David. We will!

Winnipeg’s Rick Bowness fared well, coming it at No. 6. No doubt the Jets and their fans would love to see the team look as good on the ice this coming season. Just one spot in front of him was former coach Paul Maurice, now working on his tan in Florida.

“On average, coaches in their sixties are deemed more handsome than their younger counterparts, according to the beauty-symmetry algorithm,” a press release states.

They’re aging like fine wine, which is good news for those of us entering the back nine of life.

Here’s the full list of all 32 coaches. Let’s hope they don’t try and do something similar for hockey media. I’ve often been told I have a great face — for radio.

PAYING TRIBUTE TO THE PAST

I’m looking forward to Saturday afternoon, when the statue of Hockey Hall of Famer Dale Hawerchuk is officially unveiled in True North Square outside Canada Life Centre. There’s a great slate of guests and speakers for the event, which begins at 5:15 p.m. and is free to the public.

Kris King, Paul Coffey, Dave Ellett, Scott Arniel, Mark Scheifele, Mark Chipman and Crystal Hawerchuk will all step to the podium.

I’ll be covering it for the paper prior to doing the same for evening’s Jets vs Oilers preseason game.

Maybe I’ll see you there.

Speaking of Jets 1.0 history, both Teemu Selanne and Teppo Numminen will be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame prior to the Nov. 17 home game against Anaheim.

And I heard this week from the creator/owner of a banner that once hung at Winnipeg Arena and has been seen on countless highlight videos over the years. Phil Franchewski is hoping to hear back from True North in the coming days about loaning the “52…53…54…Bossy’s Record Is No More” banner which celebrated the incredible rookie achievement of the Finnish Flash.

He’s actually tweeted about it, suggesting perhaps it could be included in both the gala dinner and arena celebration, and was thrilled to see Selanne “like” his message. That sounds like an endorsement to me.

Now does anyone know the location of the “Numminen Sets The Teppo” banner?
