Food for thought

Morning, folks.

Mike McIntyre and I had our weekly podcast chat on Wednesday, and things got a little heated.

We may need your help on this one.

In the first period of our Jetcetera: Episode 36, we discussed why NHL players may be reluctant to bring their talents to Winnipeg, along with the challenges that brings for Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff. Mike and I were pretty much in agreement here — we have grown to accept and love our city, but we can see why rich, young hockey players might not.

In the second frame, we chatted about the moves the Jets have made over the last week and the state of the team’s blue-line brigade for next season. Again, we were pretty much on the same page — mixed reviews on the deals and still work to be done on defence.

We also had a segment on the MLB playoffs and discovered we’re like-minded in our admiration for what ex-Jays GM Alex Anthopolous has done to help steer the Atlanta Braves to a 2-0 lead over the Dodgers in the NLCS and a potential berth into the World Series.

But then folks things got a little heated — and not in a good way — when Mike insisted that a) pumpkin pie is the best pie; and b) ice cream should never be eaten atop pie. In fact, he said it should never even touch the pie.

Say what?!

For the record, my favourite pie is cherry — warmed in the oven — with two scoops of vanilla ice cream. Of course, I eat it with a spoon to scoop up the melted mess.

Mike and I vehemently disagreed on raisin pie — I love it. He’s wrong, and doesn’t.

Pumpkin is OK, but I mostly eat it it for the whipped cream.

But we did find common ground in our dislike of lemon meringue pie. Although, my boss later told me he likes it, so perhaps we should give it a chance. Hey, you don’t last 34 years at this place without agreeing with the boss.

OK, folks. Let’s hear what you think. Ice cream or not? Pumpkin or cherry? And, what about raisin?

As always, you can reach me by replying to this mailing or sending me an email here.

Our coverage

Hockey dad: Mike also took time on Wednesday to spin us a column. He thought his years as a hockey parent were over once his son finished high school a couple years ago. But he’s enjoying his days of cheering from the stands going into overtime as his boy, now 19, skates for a second season with the North Winnipeg Satellites of the Capital Region Junior Hockey League. It’s a long way from the NHL, but as Mike explains, there’s never been a better time to get out and show your support for some of the local grassroots leagues that are currently operating, with plenty of social distancing safety protocols in place;

Better than nothing: There are no tackles being made, but local players aren’t complaining. They’re just happy the Pro Prep Flag Football league, which is run by local CFLers Andrew Harris and DJ Lalama, is providing them with an opportunity to play. But with COVID-19 cases on the rise, will the league make it to the end of the season?
