Free Press Head Start for April 14

Good morning.

There’s more shovelling in store for you today after snow fell overnight. A winter storm warning remains in effect, with another 5 to 10 centimetres of snow expected in the Red River Valley today, including Winnipeg, Environment Canada said shortly after 4:30 a.m. Another 2 cm is expected tonight. Many highway closures remain in effect. You can keep track of storm-related closures and cancellations here. Here is our main snowstorm story from Wednesday, which was the first snow day for Winnipeg schools in 25 years. Today is a snow day at the Manitoba legislature. The Free Press spoke with former premier Gary Filmon and others about their memories of the 1997 blizzard. Some staff members in hospitals and personal-care homes slept at work last night because of the travel conditions. The Free Press spoke to some recent Ukrainian newcomers about the storm.

The Free Press will not be publishing a print edition on Good Friday or Easter Monday but will publish an e-edition on both days. The Head Start bulletin will resume Monday. Here is a list of what’s open and closed on Good Friday.

Thirty years ago today, the Supreme Court of Canada quashed David Milgaard’s 1970 conviction for murdering Saskatoon nursing aide Gail Miller. He was released from a Manitoba prison two days later.
