Free Press Head Start for April 16

Good morning.

Firefighters and police officers — and adults who live in areas of the province hit hardest by COVID-19 — will soon be eligible for immunization, Health Minister Heather Stefanson announced last night. People with front-line jobs that are public-facing in the yet-to-be-announced hot spots, including teachers, will be prioritized.

Manitoba’s chief public health officer, Dr. Brent Roussin, said Monday he expected tighter pandemic restrictions would be announced later this week, and a calendar confirms today is Friday. Dr. Jazz Atwal will give the public a “COVID-19 update” at 12:30 p.m. Since Roussin’s last news conference, the province has announced that the highly infectious coronavirus variant first detected in Brazil is now in Manitoba. Dylan Robertson and Danielle Da Silva report.

Neighbouring Ontario could announce new restrictions today. The province’s associate medical officer of health said Thursday the situation is “dire.”
