What’s happening today
Music and art by some of Ukraine’s greatest artists, past and present, will be the focus at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, starting at 6:30 p.m.
The Sound of Ukraine Immersive Concert includes the Canadian debut of Ukrainian pianist and composer Tymur Polianskyi, who will perform with Winnipeg mezzo-soprano and folk-music vocalist Lizzy Hoyt. Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre will also bring The Immersive World of Ukrainian Art, a visual projection of works by painters Taras Shevchenko and Maria Prymachenko, to the CMHR. More ambulances, paramedics and firefighters are the answer to the staggering amount of overtime and sick days logged by Winnipeg first responders last year, according to Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Chief Christian Schmidt. New data show the toll exacted on the service by the pandemic, opioid crisis and increased mental health calls. Erik Pindera has the story.

On April 17, 1925: The Manitoba Free Press reported in Sofia, Bulgaria, the funeral of assassinated Gen. Georglioff, which was attended by members of the Bulgarian cabinet and hundreds of leading political personalities, was disrupted when the cathedral was bombed, killing many and wounding many others. The residents of cities in Saskatchewan as well as the town of Yorkton were able to purchase alcohol legally for the first time in three and a half years, with the opening of government liquor stores.
