On April 23, 1977: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that six people died in a fire at a school in Portage la Prairie for the mentally challenged; the school lacked any smoke detector or sprinkler systems. The NDP government brought down a budget that offered $50 million in tax relief that would give everyone in the province at least a token tax break. In Quebec, a group of Montrealers said the Parti Québécois’s language legislation was designed to ensure the end of the anglophone community in Quebec. READ MORE
