On April 25, 1997: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Blue Bomber Chris Walby was retiring after 16 CFL seasons to take on a new role as a CBC TV football analyst. At Brunkild, dike builders had three days to win a 10-mile race with the Red River as flood waters approached; if constructions crews succeeded, then La Salle and Sanford would stay dry, but if they failed, water could get around the city’s right flank and pour in to the La Salle River or even the Assiniboine, which could raise the level of the Red River within Winnipeg by a foot.
