Free Press Head Start for April 28, 2026

Good morning.

A local dental centre has filed a lawsuit over social media comments from a former employee it argues are defamatory. Erik Pindera has the story.

The first phase of a provincial social media ban for youth will likely start with Manitoba schools, which already restrict cellphone use, Education Minister Tracy Schmidt said Monday. Carol Sanders reports.

Six months after launching a community-run crime tip line in William Whyte, the group behind the initiative is preparing to ask the province for additional funding to keep the program alive. Tyler Searle has more here.

Today’s must-read

A surge in vacant positions and overtime hours among some Winnipeg emergency medical staff has a local union raising alarm bells.

As of Jan. 1, there were 107 vacant positions among the Winnipeg paramedics and emergency communication operators represented by the Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union, up from 47 on the same date in 2025. The union obtained the data through a series of freedom of information requests to the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service.

“This new number is a bit shocking in my mind … We hear loud and clear from our workers that they’re forced to do more with less, they’re working tons of overtime, there’s challenges … They’re burning out,” said Kyle Ross, president of MGEU. “When you have 107 vacancies, that’s pretty insurmountable for a small workforce.” Joyanne Pursaga has the story.

On the bright side

Talk about a hole in one.

Christine Keilback was getting home from the movie theatre Saturday night when she suddenly fell shoulders-deep into a hole in the boulevard across the street from her home in Winnipeg’s Wolseley neighbourhood.

Keilback tried to boost herself out but she couldn’t get a foothold because the dirt crumbled away.

The 58-year-old, who serves as the executive director at a local non-profit, says she was not injured and immediately found the situation humorous. “I said (to my friend), you’ve gotta take pictures,” Keilback said on Monday. Aaron Epp has more here.

On this date

On April 28, 1943: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Axis forces in North Africa would fight to the last man on their narrowing Tunisian bridgehead and there was no quick victory over them in sight, according to a general commanding a spearhead of the British 8th Army. In Canada, there was a possibility of expanding the air training program, which would necessitate the opening of additional schools in the west, according to RCAF Air Vice-Marshal H.R. Collard, who was also a former Winnipegger.
